Cuba; Renovation of the Milanés Theatre nears completion
The José Jacinto Milanés Theatre in Pinar del Río will be looking its best for the political and cultural gala on 25 July, following its most significant restoration in the last decade, María del Carmen Lazo Cala, chair of the Provincial Council for the Performing Arts, told the Cuban News Agency in an exclusive interview.
Ms Lazo Cala explained that restoration teams from the Cuban Fund for Cultural Heritage and other state-owned enterprises had supervised the construction and maintenance work, which began on 30 June. The work involved repairs to the roof, seating, floors and interior and exterior paintwork, as well as the restoration of 19 heritage items, such as paintings, sculptures, lamps and mirrors.
Lazo Cala highlighted the deterioration of the building following Hurricane Ian in September 2022. Despite the damage caused to homes in the neighbourhood and other priorities, the authorities joined forces to restore the coliseum, one of the oldest in Latin America.
The expert explained that work had been carried out on the acoustics, notably the replacement of the panelling on the theatre’s side walls across all three levels, and the repair of the ceilings on the various floors, which had been damaged by damp.
The work was completed in record time without compromising the quality of this iconic venue, which dates back to 1838 and pays tribute to the poet and playwright José Jacinto Milanés, who was born in Matanzas.
In the centre of Pinar del Río, work is currently under way, including painting and repairs to façades and pavements, as Cuba’s westernmost province has been chosen to host the main celebrations on 26 July, marking the 73rd anniversary of the attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks.
